linkFormer Birmingham boss is installed as early favourite to take over at SunderlandFORMER Birmingham City boss John Eustace is the early bookmakers' favourite to replace Tony Mowbray as head coach of Sunderland. Mowbray was sacked late last night with the Black Cats sitting in ninth position, three points adrift of the Championship play-off places. First-team coach Mike Dodds has been placed in temporary charge at the Stadium of Light, with Sunderland returning to action on Saturday when they host West Brom. He is unlikely to be considered for a permanent position though, and the bookies currently make Eustace a 5-1 favourite to be installed on Wearside. The former Birmingham boss was regarded to be doing an extremely good job at St Andrew's before he was controversially moved aside to make way for Wayne Rooney earlier this season. Other names to feature close to the top of the current betting markets are current Plymouth boss Steven Schumacher, ex-Southampton and Luton manager Nathan Jones, ex-Chelsea and Everton boss Frank Lampard and Paul Heckingbottom, who is expected to lose his job at Sheffield United imminently. Oddschecker’s Leon Blackman said: “Following the sacking of Tony Mowbray last night, bookmakers have had their say on who could replace him as the new Sunderland boss. "The betting market is currently wide open however, with John Eustace and Steven Schumacher favourites at 6-1. At this early stage, it seems that no real rumours are swirling around a potential replacement as there are favourites with such high odds. "This betting market will be one to watch over the coming hours and days to see what intel the bookies get on a replacement for the Mackems.” Odds to be next Sunderland manager (as compiled by Oddschecker): John Eustace 5-1 Steven Schumacher 6-1 Nathan Jones, Kevin Muscat 8-1 Frank Lampard, Paul Heckingbottom 10-1 Lee Carsley, Mike Dodds, Dean Smith 12-1 Graham Potter 16-1

linkSunderland eyeing move for new “extraordinary” manager who Louis-Dreyfus lovesThis could be a game-changer for Sunderland... With Sunderland sitting ninth and just three points adrift of the Championship play-off places, Tony Mowbray was dismissed in a bold decision from the Black Cats. The former Blackburn Rovers boss guided Sunderland into the top six in the previous campaign before they lost to eventual Wembley winners Luton Town in the semi-final. It looked as though Mowbray’s side were on course to compete for a shot at promotion once more too, only for Sunderland to bring the manager’s tenure to an end after their 1-1 draw against Millwall. Now, the search is on for the next man to enter the hot seat at The Stadium of Light, with one particularly impressive name reportedly entering the shortlist. Sunderland manager news After relieving Mowbray of his duties, Sunderland released a statement on the club’s official website thanking the manager. Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: “All at SAFC have thoroughly enjoyed working with Tony and he is quite rightly held in high regard by our players and staff, and our supporters. After arriving at an uncertain time, he helped guide us to the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs and played an important role in developing our team. This was a difficult decision to make, but we remain loyal to our ambition and our strategy, and felt that now was the right moment to take this step. “We are now focused on identifying the right candidate and we will continue to support our coaching team and players throughout the interim period.” The focus now turns to finding their next manager, with reports suggesting that one specific name has entered the shortlist. According to reliable reporter Ed Aarons of The Guardian, Reims manager Will Still has entered the shortlist to replace Mowbray at Sunderland. The Englishman has earned plenty of plaudits in Ligue 1 and Sunderland’s owner, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus has reportedly been impressed. “Extraordinary” Still would be better than Mowbray There’s no denying that Mowbray did an excellent job at Sunderland, but if they are to push on, then Still could be the perfect next step in the club’s push to return to the Premier League. The Reims manager initially stole the headlines last season when the news emerged about Reims’ £22k fine. The French club were paying the fine every week due to the fact that Still didn’t have a UEFA Pro License. Persisting with their manager despite the fines, the Ligue 1 side finished 11th and have continued their rise, climbing to as high as fifth in the current campaign. Still has earned plenty of praise for his work, including from HLTCO, who posted on X: "I know Will Still has become a meme on here since rising to prominence in France but I wholeheartedly recommend giving this interview a watch. Given his level of “fame” if you can call it that, he’s remarkably unaffected. He’s just an ordinary bloke doing an extraordinary job." Whether the Reims man makes the move to Sunderland remains to be seen, but Still certainly appears to have the credentials to take his place in the Black Cats’ technical area. With a busy festive period coming up, those at The Stadium of Light may want to ensure that their search for a new manager ends sooner rather than later.

If they didn't have someone in place before sacking Mowbray I will be very surprised. But We are talking Sunderland here 😄 Rumours are that there was a meeting on Monday where Mowbray asked the plans were for January, he wasn’t impressed with what he was told and told the board to back him or sack him. We know the rest..

linkManager ‘ready to pack bags’ for Sunderland – Transfer recruitment agreement a big factorOn Tuesday, La Dernière Heure reported Stade de Reims manager Will Still is flattered by Sunderland’s interest. It was also stated the latter’s president, Kylian Louis-Dreyfus, had held a meeting with the Belgian. L’Equipe now state the coach is ‘very interested’ in becoming Tony Mowbray’s successor at Sunderland and has made this clear to them, via his entourage. He is ‘ready to pack his bags in the coming days’. On Monday, Still ‘discreetly travelled’ to England to hold talks with the Black Cats’ leaders, where he presented his project for the Championship side. The report explains why the 31-year-old is open to leaving Reims, who are fighting for a place in European competition next season, for Sunderland. Still recently told his close friends he fears the Ligue 1 side could struggle when some of their players will go to AFCON and the Asia Cup at the start of next year. He has also discussed this with Reims and felt that they don’t have the desire to bring in significant reinforcements in January. This is echoed by RMC Sport, who add Sunderland would offer Still a ‘real influence’ with recruitment, to help them return to the Premier League. The manager has a contract until 2025 and the French club have to agreed to let him go on coition they’re paid. Sunderland haven’t yet made the final decision and L’Equipe say they’ll have to pay a fee to Reims if they decide to go ahead with Still. Reims president Jean-Pierre Caillot and director Mathieu Lacour are tough negotiators. The Black Cats have to find a way to convince them, if they want to bring Still to the club.

What really boils my pi55 is that SAFC have supposedly whittled it down to two candidates, but but to the rules set by the FA, they have to interview a black, Asian or an ethnic minority candidate even though the other candidates have no chance of getting the job, wasting the clubs time and also the other candidates time, totally bollocks 😉

SkyMichael Beale: Ex-Rangers boss in advanced talks to take over at SunderlandFormer Rangers boss Michael Beale is in advanced talks to become Sunderland's new manager The 43-year-old is set to be named as Tony Mowbray's successor at the Stadium of Light. Sunderland have spoken to a series of potential candidates - with Reims boss Will Still thought to be among them - since Mowbray's departure, but they appear to have made ground with Beale amid suggestions he could watch Saturday's Championship fixture at Bristol City from the stands. Sunderland parted company with Mowbray earlier this month, with his departure coming two days after a 1-1 draw at Millwall - a result that extended a run of one win from five games. Mike Dodds was put in interim charge and he has helped the club to two wins from two games, beating West Brom and Leeds to leave them sixth in the Championship table with Beale poised to take over. Beale has previously managed QPR in the Championship before a spell with Rangers in the Scottish Premiership. Michael Beale He moved to west London in the summer of 2022 and led QPR to the top of the Championship before turning down a move to the Premier League with Wolves in October of the same year. However, a month later Beale, who also served as Steven Gerrard's assistant at Rangers when they won the Premiership title in 2020-21, moved back to Glasgow to replace Giovanni van Bronckhorst but could only lead Rangers to a second-place finish up against Ange Postecoglou's Celtic. He was eventually dismissed after just six league games of the next campaign after a 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen left them third in the table and has been out of the game since leaving Ibrox Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and sporting director Kristjaan Speakman have led the search for Mowbray's replacement as they attempt to recruit the man they want to implement their blueprint for lasting success on Wearside. Interim boss Dodds has done his reputation little harm after the victories over West Brom and Leeds, and he will be in the dugout once again on Saturday at Ashton Gate

Probably the only one interviewed who will work with “the cunning plan” devised by the board.
So no strikers for the remainder of the season. 🫣

Roker ReportGetting a feel for BealeWith it looking likely that Michael Beale is the man Kyril Louis-Dreyfus has chosen to lead the club forward, the volume of criticism surrounding the appointment will ensure he doesn’t get much of a honeymoon period. Well, it’s fair to say that when the news of the impending appointment of Michael Beale broke on social media this afternoon that it caused quite the stir amongst Sunderland supporters. Expecting Will Still or, at worst, a relatively unheard of young coach from Scandinavia, it seems most fans stood back with a look of bemusement as the news filtered through we were instead going with the man who was just fired by Rangers a few months back. Virtually all the reaction I’ve seen from Rangers fans is that of pure hilarity. I’ve seen some call him their worst ever manager, and others recount the amount of times he made a fool of himself whilst in the chair. It’s safe to say they aren’t a fan. The reaction from fans of Queens Park Rangers - the club he left to head to Ibrox last season - comes along the same lines, although there do seem to be many who rated him as a coach but perhaps not so much as a man — something which isn’t a shock given the way he messed them around during negotiations with Wolves, before preaching about loyalty and then leaving for one of the big two clubs in Scotland soon after. As Sunderland fans we see all of this and read all of this and we then try and make our own minds up. As of writing, nothing has been confirmed but usually when an outlet as reputable as The Athletic report it, it’s as good as done. Beale is expected to be in attendance at the Bristol City game tomorrow, which will all but seal the deal. I’m trying my best to remain open minded about it all, as I do whenever we appoint a manager. My mates take joy in pointing out that I was trying to see the good in the Phil Parkinson appointment at the time, but that’s generally the way I see things. No matter who they are or what they’ve done before, they’re here now and they get a clean slate from me. It’s up to them to prove to me and the rest of the fans why they’re the right man for the job. The one big thing that gives me hope is that we’re not appointing Michael Beale to be our manager, but our Head Coach. I know one of the big criticisms of his time at Rangers was the players he allowed to leave and then the quality of the players he replaced them with, but we know already that at Sunderland the Head Coach has very little say in regards to transfers. It was a big part of the reason why Alex Neil and Tony Mowbray eventually moved on, so taking that into consideration, whoever the next man through the door actually is, they have to be prepared to work with whatever they’ve got. In this piece for the site which I put together with QPR fansite LoftForWords, the one crumb of hope they gave us is that as a coach he’s actually alright. His win ratio in Scotland was pretty high and from what I gather, he only lost four games up there and they were mostly to Celtic. His QPR team were riding high in the Championship around the time we played them at the SOL early in the season - he left, and by the time the season ended they’d just about survived relegation. Was that because he was overachieving? We’ll never know, but it leaves a lot of questions unanswered in my mind about his ability as a Championship coach and what he could potentially do with a better set of players. I’m finding it hard to get too emotional, either positively or negatively. I’m very much on the fence with this appointment and I’m content with that, because it’s happening whether I like it or not and, as I said before, any new coach coming through the door at Sunderland gets a clean slate from me. What’s very clear is that, given the volume of criticism this seemingly impending appointment has already received, if it is Beale’s job he’s not going to have much of a honeymoon period and needs to prove himself immediately. He joined a huge club at Rangers and floundered, so will he do the same with a second bite of the cherry at Sunderland? So, he might be shite, be might be alright - I guess we’re going to find out soon.
