linkKey reasons behind Will Still's decision to reject Sunderland revealedStill has been heavily linked with a move to the Stadium of Light, but it looks as though he won't be making the move to Wearside. Investment and staff concerns are key reasons behind Will Still's reluctance to take the Sunderland job, according to the Northern Echo. The Black Cats looked to have received a boost in this race when he left French side Reims, giving the Black Cats the opportunity to make an approach for him without having to fork out on a compensation fee. And even though Norwich City had been linked with a move for the 31-year-old, the Canaries went ahead and appointed an alternative target, which should have given the Wearside outfit the opportunity to tie up a deal. The Northern Echo have reported that a deal to bring Still to the Stadium of Light was all but agreed last weekend and he was close to being appointed, but a move has now collapsed. He now looks "increasingly likely" to move to Lens, with the young manager potentially set to continue his career in France for now after becoming accustomed to the country's top division. Doing a remarkable job at his previous club, it's no surprise that he has attracted plenty of interest, and it may only be a matter of time before he's back in a job. Reasons why Will Still was reluctant to join SunderlandConcerns involving investment is reported to be one reason why Still was reluctant to take the top job at the Stadium of Light. Considering the number of players that the Black Cats recruited last summer, this may come as a surprise, but their budget could potentially be limited this summer if they don't cash in on Jobe Bellingham or Jack Clarke. The makeup of his staff is another reason why he wasn't keen to take the job, with Alan Nixon previously reporting that previous target Paul Heckingbottom may have only been allowed to take one member of staff with him to Wearside. The Black Cats are now turning their attention away from Still, with Rene Maric remaining in the frame for the job. Sunderland need to get a move on and appoint a new managerThe fact the Black Cats haven't appointed a new manager yet is disappointing. Mick Beale left the club many months ago and they will have known for some time that Mike Dodds wasn't a suitable candidate to take the permanent job just yet. With this in mind, they should have had a new boss appointed some time ago. There may be weeks remaining until pre-season starts, which gives the Wearside club the opportunity to take more time to appoint a new manager, but others who already have managers in place now have a headstart. The fans deserve certainty regarding the managerial situation and it needs to come soon, with the start of the transfer window not too far away.

linkWill Still no longer in contention to become Sunderland head coachBy Dominic Shaw WILL Still is no longer in contention to take charge at Sunderland this summer after a dramatic twist, with Black Cats bosses now turning their attention elsewhere in the search for a new head coach. Still has been Sunderland's leading target in recent weeks after the 31-year-old's Reims exit early in May. The Belgian's camp say Still has rejected Sunderland because he has concerns over investment and the make-up of his coaching team. However, Sunderland sources say a deal for Still to take charge of the Black Cats was all but agreed last weekend and contracts were on the verge of being exchanged before the u-turn, which follows French top tier club Lens registering their interest in the head coach. They look increasingly likely to land Still. Lens are on the lookout for a new boss with current head coach Franck Haise set for Nice, where he'll replace former Sunderland target Francesco Farioli, who left for Ajax earlier this month. Still, who has also recently held talks with Norwich City, was on Sunderland's radar back in December after Tony Mowbray's exit and emerged as the leading target for the Black Cats when he became available earlier this month. And Sunderland sources say bosses thought their search for a new head coach had come to a close with the capture of Still just days ago. Sunderland will now turn their attention elsewhere, and while it's unclear how many candidates now remain in the frame to take charge at the Stadium of Light, the Black Cats are said to have "live targets". One of those is Rene Maric, whose Bayern Munich future remains unclear. The 31-year-old is currently in charge of Bayern's Under-19s and was expected to step up and become part of the first team coach staff under new boss Vincent Kompany. But that has not yet been confirmed and Maric was yesterday installed as the new favourite with bookmakers to take charge at Sunderland. The search for Michael Beale's replacement this week passed the 100-day mark. A number of candidates have been crossed off the list in recent weeks, including Bo Svensson, who took charge of Union Berlin, and Danny Rohl, who agreed a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday. Raphael Wicky was this week linked with the vacancy, with reports in Italy claiming a deal had been agreed. However, those reports were wide of the mark. Wicky is understood to have been profiled in the very early stages of the process to appoint a new head coach but talks have never taken place.

linkFrench media takes brutal swipe at Sunderland over Will Still sagaLuke Phelps Sunderland now look set to miss out on key manager target Will Still, following a hectic 24 hours. Will Still now looks poised to take charge of French outfit RC Lens following his departure from Reims at the start of May. Still, 31, has been fancied by Sunderland and owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus since the Black Cats sacked Tony Mowbray at the end of 2023. When Michael Beale was sacked in February, Still was again linked, with links persisting up until now, where they seem to have come to an end. Despite reports that Still had agreed to become the next Sunderland manager, he’s apparently pulled out of the running due to concerns about the investment. Still now looks set to take charge of RC Lens; piling yet more misery and uncertainty as the Sunderland manager search approaches the four-month mark. Sunderland’s ongoing managerial saga is becoming very concerning. But for the French media, especially those connected with RC Lens, it’s quite the opposite. The popular RC Lens-focussed website Allez Lenz recently published an article titles ‘RC Lens laughs, Sunderland cries’. The article go into depth about the Still saga; how he was set for Sunderland but is now set for Lens, writing that Sunder are ‘out of luck this summer’. And Black Cats fans will agree. The club’s luck is running thin, but there will still be plenty of blame shared on Louis-Dreyfus and sporting director Kristjaan Speakman. Sunderland are now facing an inevitable outcome of failing to pull the trigger on a move for Still; he’s set for another club. And he’s not the first manager to be linked with a move to the Stadium of Light this summer, but to later move elsewhere. Louis-Dreyfus will be hoping that he’s the last, though, and that Sunderland can put an end to this growing uncertainty and get a manager in place. There’s suggestions that the delay in hiring a manager has been because Sunderland have been so desperate to hire Still. But there’s also suggestions that Sunderland still have more than one name on their shortlist, with Rene Maric now looking like he could emerge as a front-runner. For as long as Sunderland don’t have a manager in place, they’ll continue to be something of a laughing stock, with their chances of enjoying a positive summer and 2024/25 quickly thinning.

Still's still the man 'cos I was told so ages ago, as mentioned above, Ray, and I've never been right as far as 'knowing something' before everybody else . . . . ever, and I want to be right this time 😇 it’s not looking good Tony. 🥲

Talk about desperation!!! linkSunderland to make ‘surprise move’ for Stephen RobinsonNixon said via his Patreon: “Sunderland will make a surprise move for St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson if they miss out on Will Still. “The Black Cats are fighting with French side Lens for young English coach Still and may improve the contract on offer. “However if that fails Irishman has his supporters at the Stadium of Light and would jump up the list of alternatives.” Stephen Robinson began his managerial career with Oldham Athletic, lasting only six months in the post. He then joined Motherwell, where he reached the Scottish League Cup and Scottish Cup final in back-to-back seasons. He resigned in December 2020 – over three years after joining the club. After a stint at Morecambe, the 49-year-old joined St Mirren in February 2022. Are the Black Cats panicking? He has gone onto pick up a 35% win rate and has most recently achieved a fifth place finish, earning them a spot in the Europa League play-offs. A move for Robinson feels miles away from the approach that the club have been taking, and it certainly doesn’t feel like a particularly exciting one. Sunderland will be familiar with snapping up a manager from St Mirren, with Jack Ross failing to achieve promotion with the Black Cats after his arrival from Paisley. While the fans will support whoever gets the job, waiting over 100 days for Robinson would be particularly underwhelming.

Not my choice, but would give him the benefit of the doubt, for me a better choice than Still.

I wonder if Mike Dodds was told his coaching job would be safe if he took on the temporary manager role in March and that is why Will Still can’t bring in his own assistants.

I wonder if Mike Dodds was told his coaching job would be safe if he took on the temporary manager role in March and that is why Will Still can’t bring in his own assistants. It won't only be Still's bug bear, think most coaches will be thinking the same. Dodds has been there with most of the duff coaches, time fir him to go as well.
