Aiden McGeady has urged Sunderland to put their Wembley shootout heartbreak behind them and bounce back at Accrington Stanley on Wednesday.
The Irishman scored two goals in the Checkatrade Trophy Final against Portsmouth on Sunday, however, that wasn’t enough to prevent penalty drama as the south coast club clinched it 5-4.
With a trip to the Wham Stadium fast approaching now, there’s no time to dwell as Jack Ross’ side revert their attentions back to their Sky Bet League One promotion bid with nine games in just over a week.
“We have to put it behind us, it’s as simple as that,” he continued.
“We can’t turn back time. Portsmouth won the cup, fair play to them but now we have to kick on for the last nine games of the season and get ourselves first or second.
“Time will tell (if we can get over it). It’s down to us to not let it affect our season.
“It was a good performance, it was a good day out, it’s a bitter feeling at the end,” he continued.
“It’s a trophy that once you are in the final you want to win, but at the start of the season the main aim was to win promotion.
“We have nine games left this season to do that, so nine cup finals, really.”
