Supposed to have been in the middle of his medical before SAFC even approached him. To be honest Les, never heard of the lad, plus if he was any good, do you think Gerrard would have let him go I thought the same about this kid we have (supposedly) just signed after being released by Burnley Ray. If he is the "next Defoe" as the papers say he wouldn't be released for nowt. 😉

linkNew Portsmouth signing Ross McCrorie explains why he turned down late Sunderland offerRoss McCrorie says he opted against a move to Sunderland because he had already been convinced on a move to promotion rivals Portsmouth. The Rangers midfielder joined Pompey on a season-long loan on Friday, with an option to purchase next summer included in the deal. Kenny Jackett's side had been in contact with the player for a while over a deal, but the player revealed that the Black Cats made a last-minute attempt to lure him to the Stadium of Light. It was too late though, the highly-touted young Scot had already decided on Fratton Park. McCrorie revealed: "I’m really happy with the move and I’m joining a big club who want to progress to the Championship. It’s a great move for all parties. "I became aware of the interest a couple of weeks ago along with a lot of other clubs. Pompey was the one which stood out to me, though, after speaking to the manager. "Sunderland came in for me and wanted me to sign, but I just felt that Pompey was the right fit. "Sunderland came in when I was about to do a medical. They tried to sweep in and get things sorted, but I thought Pompey was the best fit. "We just missed out last season and there is a good group of players here who are going to be up there challenging. "I spoke to the manager, and chief executive Mark Catlin - and they were great with me. I was shown around and all the boys made me feel welcome. The captain shook my hand straightaway. I feel really welcome here." The news will no doubt concern many Sunderland fans who are already feeling tetchy about the club's slow start to the transfer window. The Black Cats finally made a breakthrough on Monday when Conor McLaughlin joined on a free, but by then they were one of only five League One sides without a new signing. Goalkeeper Lee Burge has since been added, but his was also a free transfer, and there is concern on Wearside starting to grow over the club's transfer policy. Latest Sunderland AFC news

We are a Professional Football Club, right? 😡 Not only embarrassing, but of all the positions that need strengthening CM is the last on the list. I'm actually surprised Ross hasn't walked out given the bollocky transfer policy.

linkSunderland close in on striker but Posh want to hand new deal to MaddisonThe Black Cats, who are closing in on another striker to boost their under-23s in the shape of Burnley’s Tinashe Chakwana, have been slow movers so far on the transfer front. Only Connor McLaughlin has arrived as a new outfield player to boost pre-season training, with Sunderland having also brought in goalkeeper Lee Burge. Sunderland are seeking fresh attacking impetus this summer and Doncaster’s John Marquis is one of the strikers on the club’s radar, while County Durham-born Maddison boasts the creativity Jack Ross is looking for in his squad. But Peterborough have warned interested clubs that they intend to keep him and they are keen to tie him down to a new deal after entering the final year of his contract. Speculation and rumours increased after Maddison did not travel to Spain for a pre-season training camp with Posh and interested clubs can take advantage of a £2.5m release clause in his deal. However, Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony wants to keep a player who finished with the highest number of assists in League One last season – and someone who impressed against Sunderland. MacAnthony said: “Marcus had a long-standing appointment for a minor procedure that the club were aware of and happy that it took place. He had to have it done and it meant he couldn’t come away with us (to Spain).” He added: “We are relaxed about his (contract) situation. Everyone knows he has a release clause and Hull did test the water with his agent, but he will not be going anywhere if that release clause hasn’t been met. “He has not been speaking to other clubs so everyone can stop getting excited.” While there appears to be some work to be still done to secure the services of Maddison, Sunderland are closing in on Chakwana. Sunderland are understood to have agreed a deal with the 20-year-old who was recently released by Burnley after a couple of impressive years at Turf Moor with the Under-18s and 23s. Chakwana is looking for a club where he feels he can force his way on to the first team stage and at Sunderland the Zimbabwean international is sure to have that chance. Sunderland are preparing for their first pre-season friendly of the summer on Thursday when they will face non-league South Shields.

Sunderland could miss out on Peterborough’s Marcus Maddison if they fail to meet his release clause, report The Northern Echo.
The playmaker missed out on the club’s pre-season trip to Spain, prompting speculation that he could be on his way out of the club, but owner Darragh MacAnthony quashed those rumours via Peterborough Today, saying Maddison had undergone a medical procedure which ruled him out.
Sunderland have reportedly been interested in the 25-year-old since last summer, but MacAnthony stated that he will not be sold for below his £2.5m release clause via the Northern Echo, despite only having a year remaining on his current deal.
The Black Cats have made just two signings this summer, but could have money to spend after the sale of Lamine Kone and release of Lee Cattermole.
However, MacAnthony stated that he is yet to receive an approach for Maddison from Sunderland.
Speaking to the Peterborough media team, he said: “We are relaxed about his (contract) situation. Everyone knows he has a release clause and Hull did test the water with his agent, but he will not be going anywhere if that release clause hasn’t been met.
We can't afford 2.5 million.
Sad days

link to story on Roker ReportIs George Dobson any good? Walsall fan tells all about what potential Sunderland signing is like Sunderland v Walsall - EFL Sky Bet League 1 Photo by MI News/NurPhoto via Getty Images RR: So, George Dobson. There won’t be many Sunderland supporters who know a lot about him. How did he do when he played against us last season? JC: I can’t comment on the games that were played up at your place, but Dobson was decent in both home games against Sunderland. In the game where Max Power got sent off we as a team dropped deeper and deeper at 2-0 up, meaning he had less of an impact on the game as it wore on. RR: What sort of midfielder is he? JC: Dobson is a box-to-box midfielder whose biggest strengths are his relentless running, his ability in the tackle and his range of passing on the ball. The one thing he needs to improve on are his goals - he didn’t score many last season, but that’s mainly down to being in a poor side and having to play deeper due to our captain, Adam Chambers, getting injured on the opening day of the season. Sunderland v Walsall - EFL Sky Bet League 1 Photo by MI News/NurPhoto via Getty Images RR: At the age of 21 he’s your captain. What does that say about him as a character? JC: He was only captain due to the aforementioned injuries to Chambers and Joe Edwards. To be honest, at his age he probably shouldn’t have been captain, and instead should have been allowed to concentrate on his football. RR: Will Walsall fans be sad to see him leave? JC: Yes they will, but he’s got two years left on his contract so if we can get a decent fee that will then be invested back into the squad for our League Two promotion push then it’s what we need to do. He’s far too good for League Two, so the fans are probably wondering if his heart would be in it should he stay around and play for Walsall next season. Sunderland v Walsall - Sky Bet League One Photo by Ian Horrocks/Sunderland AFC via Getty Images RR: What would you say his best characteristic is as a player? JC: His energy - he just doesn’t stop running throughout the ninety minutes. RR: What area of his game does he need to work on most? JC: Like I said before, George needs to add more goals to his game but in a better side and in a more advanced role than he played for us, I’m sure he’ll start adding them. RR: Do you think he’ll be a good signing for Sunderland? JC: I’m sure that he will be. Like most fans I’m sure that the first thing you demand from any player is that they work hard for your team, and George Dobson will certainly do that for you.

If we sign him, young and full of energy, couple of more signings like that we will be doing okay.
