www.sunderlandecho.com/sport/football/sunderland-afc/sunderland-afc-news/sunderland-offer-contract-to-in-demand-free-agent-striker-reports-1-9817236Sunderland have offered a contract to free agent striker Lawrence Shankland, according to reports.Sunderland have offered a contract to Lawrence Shankland - according to reports The former Ayr United striker, who netted 34 times last season, has long been linked with the Black Cats after his stunning form in front of goal brought him to the attention of Jack Ross. And a report from the Scottish Sun now claims that Sunderland have made their interest in the frontman concrete – by offering him a deal. Shankland would be available to sign without a fee this summer, but Ross will face intense competition if he is to land the prolific Scottish star. Portsmouth, Rangers, Celtic and Swansea City have all been credited with an interest in the 24-year-old in recent months. More recently, the likes of Hull City, Nottingham Forest and Hearts are thought to have shot the striker some admiring glances. But this latest report suggests that the Black Cats are in the driving seat after offering terms – with Sunderland and Hearts the two sides who have made contact thus far. A decision may not be forthcoming immediately, though, with the striker currently on holiday and unlikely to make a decision until he returns. Sunderland have also been linked once more with Stewart Downing, with the winger believed to be weighing-up offers from a number of clubs after leaving Middlesbrough.

www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/sunderland-target-holds-talks-blackburn-16426793Sunderland target holds talks with Blackburn Rovers but no quick decision expectedSunderland target Stewart Downing has held talks with Blackburn Rovers - but Middlesbrough have not given up hope of re-signing the winger. Downing's contract with the Teessiders expires at the end of the month when he will become a free agent and Sunderland are one of several clubs to have shown interest, with Scottish side Rangers also keen. But Blackburn - under former Boro boss Tony Mowbray - have held talks with Downing this week with a view to bringing the 34-year-old to Ewood Park. Mowbray said: "I know him from my ties with Middlesbrough Football Club over a number of years and he has decisions to make. "He has options. My personality isn't to beat him with a stick and say 'if we don't know by Friday then forget it you're not coming'. "Footballers have to make the right decision and if they are to come to your football club they need to weigh things up, decide what's right for them, feel the positives or negatives about what the managers have spoken about and then make the decisions." Downing will be 35 by the time the new season begins and his next contract is likely to be only for 12 months, meaning location could hold the key because it would avoid the need for him to uproot his family. Sunderland is within easy reach of his home but joining the Wearsiders would mean dropping into League One. Blackburn can offer Championship football but he may not want to move so far away, and moving to Rangers would also be a major upheaval. Another contract at Boro would allow him to continue playing in the Championship and stay at his current base, and with his friend Jonathan Woodgate now in charge at the Riverside it may well be that Downing stays on Teesside. If he did move to Sunderland, it would see him return to the club where he spent two months on loan in 2003, scoring three goals in seven appearances for Mick McCarthy's side in the second tier.

www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/sunderland-afc-transfers-curtis-nelson-16435339'I presume he’s got something lined up' - Oxford boss' verdict on Sunderland target Curtis NelsonCurtis Nelson of Oxford United (Image: Getty Images) Reported Sunderland target Curtis Nelson will leave Oxford United this summer. U's manager Karl Robinson admitted the centre-half, who will become a free agent when his contract expires at the end of June, won’t be extending his stay at the League One club. Curtis has been one of the players linked with the Black Cats this summer, with Jack Ross thought to be keen to add to his options at the back. But while it’s thought he would like to move to the Championship, Sunderland will be one of the many clubs alerted to his availability. “I’ll be honest, I don’t foresee Curtis being with us next season. I think that’s quite obvious,” Robinson told the Oxford Mail. “I spoke to him about four weeks ago. I presume he’s got something lined up, but we don’t know where. “I want to thank Curtis for everything he’s done. He gave us everything, at the back end of the season he was arguably one of our better players. “I know when I first came in there were question marks over certain things. Kazaiah Sterling of Tottenham Hotspur u21 battles with Curtis Nelson of Oxford United (Image: Getty Images) “But every question mark I had over Curtis Nelson he certainly answered. “There’s no arguments, we will always be there for him. “Maybe we’ll cross paths again and he goes with our best wishes.”

www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/curtis-nelson-set-scratched-list-16436684Sunderland target Curtis Nelson is expected to join Cardiff City on a free transfer next month.Central defence is a real priority for the Black Cats this season as they look to upgrade a squad which missed out on promotion to an injury-time goal in the League One play-off final . Twelve months ago they brought in an entirely new set of centre-backs but manager Jack Ross lost faith in each of them at different points during the campaign. So while all but the on-loan Jimmy Dunne are contracted to return for next season, new players are being sought. Oxford United’s Nelson was high on the list and available on a free transfer with his contract expiring in a fortnight. Boss Karl Robinson has already resigned himself to the 26-year-old leaving. As Oxford fans, chairman Stewart Donald and executive director Charlie Methven will be well aware of Nelson and their knowledge of the club presumably played a part in signing former forward Chris Maguire when he was released by Bury last summer. But the Daily Mail have reported Cardiff City, relegated from the Championship last season, have agreed a deal to sign Nelson, forcing Sunderland to look at other options. Charlton Athletic captain Jason Pearce is another the Black Cats are thought to have considered, but it is understood he favours a return to former club Portsmouth, who are expecting Matt Clarke to progress up the league ladder after an impressive season at Fratton Park. Brighton and Hove Albion looks his most likely destination. Oldham Athletic’s George Edmundson is another possibility for Pompey, but Rangers are reportedly considering matching the £600,000 bids made by the south coast club and Peterborough United. Championship side Reading look like early favourites to sign Sheffield United’s transfer-listed Ben Heneghan. Glenn Loovens started the season as Sunderland’s first-choice central defender, but did not feature at all for the first team after being sent off at Portsmouth in the run-up to Christmas. Ross lost faith in Alim Ozturk even more quickly, and between the opening game of the season and Easter weekend, he only started one further league game, only to become a fixture for the rest of the season. That was when the established partnership of Jack Baldwin and Tom Flanagan was broken up after Sunderland’s 5-4 defeat at home to Coventry City . Baldwin, the only central defender the Wearsiders paid money for last summer, found his grip on a starting place loosened once Dunne joined on loan from Burnley, but both shared Flanagan’s habit of mixing good moments with disastrous ones. With the exception of Football League Trophy games, Baldwin did not miss a minute of football between August 11 and January 19, or play another minute after the Coventry debacle. Northern Ireland international Flanagan, who mainly played as a full-back for previous club Burton Albion, regained his place for the run-in. Loovens desperately lacked pace and Ozturk finesse, but it was Baldwin and Flanagan’s struggles physically which probably caused Sunderland most problems defensively last season, and that is an area Ross will look to address. Lamine Kone, the one central defensive hangover from the Premier League era, spent last season on loan at Strasbourg, and has since made the move permanent .

www.sunderlandecho.com/sport/football/sunderland-afc/sunderland-afc-news/who-is-josh-koroma-the-500-000-sunderland-middlesbrough-huddersfield-and-aston-villa-target-1-9824361Sunderland have been linked with a move for Leyton Orient striker Josh Koroma – but what do we know about the non-league hotshot?
Everything you need to know about Sunderland target Josh Here’s everything you need to know about Sunderland’s striker target: Key details: Age: 20 Position: Striker Former clubs: Leyton Orient What has his career been like? Given his youthful age, it’s perhaps no surprise that Koroma has spent all of his career with Leyton Orient thus far, having broken into the first-team during the 2015/16 campaign. It was the following season where he really started to stamp his authority on the first-team, featuring 24 times and netting three goals as the O’s dropped into non-league. And since that relegation, Koroma has found himself a regular in the Orient line-up having continued his rapid rate of development. He has netted 15 times over the last two seasons with a number of eye-catching performances seeing him gain admirers higher up the football pyramid. Koroma has also received international recognition, having been handed a cap for the England ‘C’ squad. How did he perform last season? Last season was arguably Koroma’s best thus far, and certainly provided his greatest goal return. The 20-year-old found the net 11 times during a productive season, which also saw him ruled-out for a spell through injury. His goal-scoring record may have been outshone by teammate Macauley Bonne, but it was Koroma’s performances that really got the Orient fans excited, What type of player is he? A complete striker, Koroma is just as comfortable finishing a chance as he is creating once. With an explosive turn of pace, tricky feet and fine technical ability, the youngster is a handful for defenders - and can provide plenty of chances for those around him, too. How much will Sunderland have to pay to sign him and who else is interested? Reports suggest that Orient will be looking for a fee of £500,000 for one of their most promising talents, with bids in the region of £300,000 already turned down. Koroma has no shortage of admirers, too, with Middlesbrough and Huddersfield Town also claimed to be in the race. Aston Villa showed an interest last January.

Sunderland to move for John Marquis and Harry Brockbank | The Northern EchoSUNDERLAND should have a new owner by the end of the week – and Mark Campbell’s first move will be to kick-start the club’s summer recruitment drive with offers for Harry Brockbank and John Marquis. Donald will retain a shareholding of around ten per cent, with Juan Sartori and Charlie Methven also continuing to hold a minority stake, but Campbell will have the casting vote over all major decisions and will assume control for charting Sunderland’s future direction. The 46-year-old is understood to be heading a four-man consortium of English investors, with two members of the group boasting strong links to Sunderland. Campbell, who boasts business interests in the UK and United States, has been the leader of the group from its inception, although it remains to be seen whether he will play a public role once his takeover is complete. Both Donald and Methven have put a lot of stock in being open and approachable during their time at the club, with their stance helping repair the previously-fractured relationship with the fans. Campbell is set to appoint former Celtic scout John Park as Sunderland’s new director of football, and will retain Jack Ross as manager despite May’s play-off final defeat to Charlton Athletic. The Northern Echo: Jack Ross Ross will be given the opportunity to strengthen his squad this summer, with automatic promotion the clear aim once the new League One season begins in August. Sunderland have been linked with a number of players since the end of last season, but the change of ownership has effectively put a block on any deals being completed. That log-jam should be released in the next few days, enabling Ross to step up his recruitment drive. A new forward is a key priority, and while Sunderland remain hopeful of persuading Lawrence Shankland to snub offers from a number of clubs in Scotland to move to Wearside following his release from Ayr United, Marquis remains a leading target. The Doncaster Rovers striker was the subject of a number of approaches in January, but while he expressed a desire to move to the Stadium of Light, his employers stepped in to prevent him leaving the Keepmoat Stadium. The Northern Echo: Striker: John Marquis Doncaster’s failure to win promotion means he will almost certainly be moving on this summer, and Ross remains a huge fan of the 27-year-old, who scored 26 goals last season. However, Sunderland will face a major battle to land Marquis, with a number of clubs in the Championship having approached Doncaster to signal their interest in the striker. Millwall are interested in re-signing a player who left them in 2016 after progressing through their academy ranks, while QPR are also understood to be lining up a bid. “If truth be told, John probably doesn’t want to be here,” said Doncaster boss Grant McCann. “He feels he deserves a crack at the Championship and so do I to be honest. I think to score 26 goals, he deserves the chance at a Championship club and we won’t stand in his way.” Sunderland will attempt to persuade Marquis that he is better off remaining in League One and being part of a promotion push rather than scrapping in the bottom half of the Championship table. They will also have to do a selling job to persuade Brockbank to move to Wearside, with the free agent also the subject of strong interest from the Championship. The Northern Echo: Bolton Wanderers' Harry Brockbank Brockbank’s contract at Bolton Wanderers has expired, and Ross has identified the 20-year-old right-back as the ideal replacement for Adam Matthews, who has been linked with a possible return to Celtic following his release from the Stadium of Light. However, Brentford have held a number of talks with the youngster’s representatives, with Ipswich Town also interested in a deal as they attempt to rebuild following their relegation from the Championship. Luke O’Nien impressed at right-back in the second half of last season, but Ross wants to sign a specialist for the role. Donald Love is another option on the right of the back four, although the former Manchester United trainee has not played since damaging his ankle ligaments last September.

link to storyAnother one off Sunderland's summer shopping list as striker Freddie Ladapo joins Rotherham UnitedSunderland target Freddie Ladapo has joined Rotherham United. The Black Cats showed an interest in signing the Plymouth Argyle striker in January, but the Pilgrims’ relegation from League One made him available this summer. And with Sunderland yet to add to their squad in this transfer window, League One rivals Rotherham have moved in to complete a £500,000 deal. After being rebuffed with a host of January enquiries, the Wearsiders eventually opted to pay £3m, potentially rising to £4m, for Wigan Athletic’s Will Grigg. But, hampered by an ankle injury, Grigg has so far disappointed, scoring only five goals in the second half of the season, and watching the key end-of-season matches from the bench. With big summer signing Charlie Wyke also finding the net just five times – the first half of his season was ruined by knee problems – manager Jack Ross is looking to add centre-forwards this summer. Pace sorely needs to be injected into the squad, making Ladapo an attractive option. He scored 19 goals last term. Doncaster Rovers’ John Marquis was another option – and again, a player they looked at in January – but would cost around twice as much. Grant McCann said earlier this month he thought the 27-year-old wanted and deserved a move to the Championship, and now the Northern Irishman has left the Keepmoat Stadium for Hull City, he could be in a position to offer it. Free agent Lawrence Shankland is an even longer-term target Sunderland would like to return to . The 23-year-old scored 34 goals for Ayr United in all competitions last season, and worked with Ross during two loan spells at St Mirren. Chairman Stewart Donald is of the opinion that his side need to make “six to eight” signings this summer but as yet, none have been forthcoming. Not helping matters is the fact American-based Mark Campbell is trying to buy the majority of Donald’s shareholding but shortly before Ladapo‘s move was confirmed, he was stressing the importance of patience to supporters on Twitter. Sunderland sold left-back Reece James to Doncaster earlier this month .

link to storyScottish side make offer to Sunderland striking target Lawrence ShanklandDundee United’s Sporting Director Tony Asghar has confirmed that his club have made a contract offer to highly sought after striker Lawrence Shankland amidst interest from Sunderland. Asghar alluded to the fact that the 23-year old has received interest from elsewhere and is ‘in-demand’, saying: Rumours last week suggested that Shankland had been seen at Sunderland’s Academy of Light as he held talks with the club, but the player is understood to be weighing up his options on the back of a successful spell with Ayr United in which he managed to score 63 goals in just two seasons.

link to storySunderland interested in Northern Ireland right-back Conor McLaughlin, according to reportsSunderland are interested in signing Northern Ireland right-back Conor McLaughlin following his release from Millwall, according to reports. McLaughlin, 27, was released by the Lions this summer having made just 11 appearances last season, but he has considerable Championship and League One experience. The Sun's Alan Nixon claims Sunderland have made a move. The full-back has played 39 Championship games in total, while he has also made 132 appearances in the third tier that Sunderland will be hoping to gain promotion from in the upcoming season. Over the weekend owner Stewart Donald revealed that the club were closing in on three deals as they seek a breakthrough in the transfer market. They're one of just five League One clubs yet to make their first signing. But Monday saw all players released by clubs this summer free to join new clubs, and Sunderland are said to have moved to secure his signature after his release from Millwall. Jack Ross is in need of a new right-back this summer after they released Adam Matthews. Donald Love remains on the books but he is likely to be sold if the club can find interest in him. That leaves just Luke O'Nien who can play at right-back. The former Wycombe man was signed as a midfielder last summer but took his opportunity with Matthews and Love both injured and established himself in the position, earning the Supporters Association Young Player of the Year award. McLaughlin, if signed, would compete with O'Nien for that starting spot and Sunderland could have sway in convincing him to join. McLaughlin has been capped 34 times by Northern Ireland and is an international team-mate of Black Cats duo Will Grigg and Tom Flanagan.

Looks like we are being linked with every free player again, other clubs and fans must be pissing themselves laughing, owners saying we have the best budget in this devision and probably the championship, then not trying to part with any money for players. The players we are missing out on is not just down to the fact they don't want to play for us or want to play for someone else.
