Gus Poyet makes ‘interesting’ Kyril Louis-Dreyfus claim after meeting him on Sunderland pre-season tour
Gus Poyet made a surprise appearance during Sunderland’s pre-season training camp in Spain.
The Black Cats claimed a win and a draw as they took on Nottingham Forest and Eldense, before returning to Wearside.
Poyet, who was sacked by Sunderland in 2015, briefly joined the senior squad after he was invited by fellow Uruguayan Juan Sartori.
The coach was present for the clash with Nottingham Forest and also spent some time at the team’s base, meeting Kyril Louis-Dreyfus for the first time.
Louis-Dreyfus does one thing that Ellis Short ‘never’ did
Poyet has now heaped praise on the Sunderland board and has admitted that he found one thing about Louis-Dreyfus ‘very interesting’.
Speaking to the Sunderland Echo, the 56-year-old said: “I had a good time with Juan Sartori and then with Mr Dreyfus, we’ve spoken on the phone a few times but we’ve never met in person before now.
“I met the coach, who is a great guy. They are working, I can tell you that. Non-stop. There was not one minute when people weren’t coming and going, coming back. Kristjaan coming in to speak with them because he is on the phone with someone… they are working non-stop.
“One thing I found very, very interesting and people will make their own opinion, I don’t ever remember the owner staying with the team all time in pre-season. I think it’s interesting, he [Kyril] is there, he’s present, he’s supporting, he’s working and helping [with transfers]. It was different, I remember Tony Bloom popping up but never staying with the team. Ellis Short never stayed with us.
“I thought it was really interesting and if it’s good for the coach and the team, very well.”
Do Sunderland fans have faith in their owner again?
Louis-Dreyfus doesn’t manage to get to all of Sunderland’s matches, but he definitely travels to Wearside a lot more than Short did.
His constant presence in Spain was never really considered, but it definitely shows a lot of commitment and suggests there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes that the supporters are unaware of.
There is a lot of pressure on the chairman after such a disastrous 2023-24 season, and it’s good to see that he is really taking it seriously.
Spending time with Regis Le Bris can only help the team too, as it is always beneficial for the manager to have a good relationship with the owner.
Louis-Dreyfus and Kristjaan Speakman look to have already won back some fans so far this summer, but there is still some way to go if they are to make up for their mistakes
