Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce the signing of Colombia international Ian Poveda.
The 24-year-old attacker has signed a three-year contract at the Stadium of Light, which includes a Club option of an additional year.
Poveda joins following his departure from Leeds United, who he represented in the Premier League and the Sky Bet Championship throughout a four-year spell.
Upon moving to Wearside, he said: “All I want to do is get on the pitch and play for Sunderland. I feel like I have the right people at the Club supporting me and the love I’ve already received from the people here is something I can’t describe. I’m a creative player with good one-on-one ability, who is never afraid to take anyone on. I’ll work hard for the team and I’m excited to get started.”
Kristjaan Speakman added: "We have tracked his experiences in the Championship throughout recent seasons and are delighted. He’s strong in one-on-one situations and has the acceleration to change the tempo of our play, whilst offering the flexibility to play in several attacking positions. We feel these are qualities that can improve our team and equally, he requires the foundations to develop the next stage of his career. We are confident we can provide that platform and we are delighted to welcome Ian to the Club."
Born in Southwark, London, Poveda built an impressive resume at youth level after spending time with Chelsea, Arsenal, Barcelona, Brentford, and Manchester City.
After representing the Citizens at youth level, he made his senior debut for Pep Guardiola’s side in the last four of the 2018-19 Carabao Cup.
He continued to feature in City’s senior matchday squad and joined Leeds United in January 2020, six months before the Club’s promotion to the Premier League.
Poveda made 14 appearances in the top flight in his first full season at Elland Road, which was followed by second-tier loan moves to Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool.
The Colombia international, who has earnt two senior caps, featured on 17 occasions in the Championship last season, starting the campaign with Leeds before joining Sheffield Wednesday in January.
Poveda will join his new team-mates on Thursday morning ahead of the Club’s pre-season trip to Blackpool this weekend.
