Le Bris outlines Spain trip expectations
Régis Le Bris is relishing the chance to get to know his players and staff better during a week-long trip to Spain.
The travelling group departed the Academy of Light today ahead of their pre-season camp in Alicante, which features two fixtures against Nottingham Forest on Friday 19 July and CD Eldense on Sunday 21 July.
Games against local opposition - South Shields and Gateshead - kick started the Black Cats’ pre-season campaign on Saturday after a fitness-fuelled two weeks on the training pitch.
But with the start of the 2024-25 Sky Bet Championship campaign less than one month away, Le Bris has told safc.com what he’s learned about his players so far and how he plans to maximise his time away with the group during the next seven days.
“After two weeks of technical and physical conditioning, for me, Saturday was the real start of the season,” he said.
“It was an interesting experience. Two different scenarios, two different teams. They were mixed and I felt that the players tried to express our ideas.
“We want to build a strong unit with ideas in different phases of the game,” he continued.
“We want to be a proactive team. We have talented players, but the ideas behind all this preparation is to be a team and I think we can build this team, but we need time and different experiences to achieve that goal.
“This trip will give us time to get to know each other - that is one of the main purposes of the trip.
“We will also have time to go deeper into the different tactical principles so I am waiting for that moment to increase our level. We will play against two strong teams as well so we will have other experiences which we can take forward with us.
“We need to improve. These two experiences will be very useful to us so we know where we are at in this moment. We always need better opponents to increase our level so I hope this will be good for that.”
