Supporter update
Sunderland AFC recently announced a comprehensive stadium development plan to improve fan experience at the Stadium of Light.
This includes the installation of a new state-of-the-art pitch ahead of the 2024-25 season, which will replace the stadium’s existing playing surface.
Due to the extensive work involved, we have been advised that the ashes of people previously interred at the stadium will be disturbed.
The Club plans to relocate the earth from where ashes were placed to a redeveloped memorial garden outside the Stadium of Light.
This will act as a dedicated area of remembrance for supporters of all faiths and be accessible throughout the week, including matchdays.
Supporters who’s loved one’s ashes have been laid to rest at the stadium are also invited to the stadium from 10am to 2pm on Tuesday 14 May.
This will ensure they are able to observe a period of reflection before this process commences and allow them to confirm the site where the ashes of their loved ones were placed.
If you would like to attend, please contact ashes@safc.com
The Club has on record the locations of where ashes have been placed, but if you would like to confirm this via email, please feel free to do so via the address above.
Sunderland AFC would like to thank supporters for their understanding relating to this incredibly sensitive matter.

Again the club has not really bothered about the supporters, some who's dying wish was to have their ashes spread 'inside' the SoL.
Now getting papped oot side.
Wonder what Leadbitter thinks.

He probably thinks, like most of us do, that the club have handled this as sensitively as possible, being as we need a new pitch 😉

Only crazy because the club left it happen. How can they guarantee that everyone's ashes will be transferred, can't. Plus we gave had new pitches laid in the past and not been a problem, probably the ashes were dumped then, who knows. During the civil works, not a hardship dragging the top soil over and reusing it, then the ashes would remain, if there Aby ashes left that is.
