linkMike Dodds dealt fresh Sunderland player blow after Leicester City defeatSunderland will be without a key player for the upcoming Championship games vs Southampton and QPR. Sunderland now find themselves 10 points outside the play-off places after suffering a fifth-straight defeat in the Championship on Tuesday night. Mike Dodds watched on as his side lost 1-0 vs Leicester City at the Stadium of Light; Dodds has now lost three games out of three as interim boss. Up next is another tricky outing against top-six opposition, as the Black Cats make the long-haul journey down to Southampton this weekend. But one player who won’t be available for that game is Luke O’Nien. O’Nien, 29, has once again been an ever-present in the Sunderland XI this season. The club captain has featured in 35 of Sunderland’s 36 Championship fixtures so far in this campaign, but after picking up a 10th yellow card of the season last night, he’s now set to serve a two-game suspension. Naturally a midfielder, O’Nien has found himself playing as a centre-back since Sunderland’s return to the Championship ahead of last season. Last time round O’Nien often found himself playing on the right of defence but this year it’s been in the middle of defence, often partnering Dan Ballard. A blow for Dodds and Sunderland, but a chance for someone else Not having O’Nien available for what will be a really tough game against a Southampton side who’ll dominate possession and passing on Saturday is certainly a blow. And with Dodds’ Sunderland lining up in a back-five of late, it could also prompt Dodds to change shape once again. Though he may be reluctant to do so after criticisms regarding the shape last night; chopping and changing some more may not be the best idea. So should he stick with a back-five and three centre-backs on the pitch, expect Ballard and Jenson Seelt to start in the middle, with Leo Hjelde potentially coming into the middle. The Norwegian hasn’t impressed in the last two outings playing at left wing-back, but his defensive traits could be better-suited to playing in the middle. And shifting Hjelde into the middle gives Dodds the perfect chance to unleash Callum Styles in a familiar left wing-back role, after he was deployed in a more advanced role on the right vs Norwich City last weekend. So whilst O’Nien’s absence is a blow, it could be a blessing in disguise as Hjelde and Styles could have opportunities to shine.

Hi Mackems, Saints fan in peace. I am sure you have seen that there has been a major fire right next to the ground. It is still possible that the game Saturday may be postponed because of toxic material from the fire landing inside the stadium . So for those of you that are coming down please stay in touch with your club so you dont have a wasted journey, It is a bloody long way just to have a pint in spoons.

linkLatest update on if Southampton v Sunderland will go ahead after Preston postponementSouthampton’s Championship clash against Sunderland this weekend is in doubt as the club awaits assessment. The Saints were due to host Preston North End on Wednesday evening but a nearby fire meant the game had to be postponed. The fire started in the early hours of the afternoon in a warehouse located opposite St Mary’s Stadium. It is not yet clear what damage the blaze caused. Motorists have been advised to stay clear of the surrounding area as several roads have been cordoned off. Will Southampton v Sunderland go ahead? As it stands, the game is still scheduled to take place on Saturday afternoon, though, according to the Daily Echo, it ‘hangs in the balance’. The stadium will now be assessed for any smoke damage. The emergency services released a statement on Thursday morning, which read: “Crews remain at the fire that has affected industrial units near St Mary’s football stadium, Southampton. “There are currently 4 Fire engines, 1 Aerial Ladder Platform and other specialist vehicles in attendance. People in the area are advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the amount of smoke that is still in the area. “Some roads local to the incident are closed and people are advised to avoid the area to allow movements of emergency vehicles.” What it means for Southampton’s fixture list Southampton now have a pile-up of fixtures heading into the latter stages of the gruelling 46-game campaign. The South Coast club have 11 games remaining and must find room to reschedule their clash against Preston and now potentially Sunderland. Four fixture slots are available, all of which fall in mid-week. The weeks commencing March 11th, April 15th, April 22nd and April 29th are the potential dates on offer to reschedule. Russell Martin will now have to contend with a congested run of games, which will see his side play their remaining 10 in the space of 36 days. The former Swansea City boss will have to consider resting and rotating some of his key players, which is far from ideal as they chase down the top two in the hunt for automatic promotion. Southampton reside eight points adrift of second-placed Ipswich Town and 11 from league-leaders Leicester City, both of whom have played a game more. The season is due to end on the 4th of May, when they meet Leeds United at Elland Road in what could be a decisive match in the thrilling promotion race

I've said it before and will say it again, Patterson needs taken out the team, his distribution is shit, he palms the ball out back into trouble.
Our defence is open to every break
