www.safc.com/news/team-news/2019/april/wyke-preview-peterborough-united'It's in our hands but we must keep winning' - WykeCharlie Wyke isn’t taking any game for granted as Peterborough United await the Lads on Easter Monday. Sunderland head to the ABAX Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday, kick-off 3pm, eyeing another three points after they brushed Doncaster Rovers aside on Good Friday. Jack Ross’ side produced a fine display to dismantle Donny inside the opening 45, with Wyke proving instrumental once more - bagging a goal and an assist. While the result leaves Sunderland third with a game in hand on second place Barnsley, the big man knows only too well the importance of another three points with just 12 points left to play for. “We keep saying that it is in our own hands if we keep winning games,” he told safc.com “Performances like the one on Friday help with the mood around the place. “It gives you a lot of confidence, especially when you can score two goals and keep a clean sheet so we’re flying going into Monday’s game at Peterborough. “All the games now are massive,” he continued. “We have got to play well, hopefully that can continue from Friday and then we can look to build in our remaining matches.”

www.safc.com/news/team-news/2019/april/match-preview-v-peterborough-unitedPeterborough United v SunderlandFour games, 12 points and still, it’s all to play for in the race for promotion to the Championship. Easter Monday sees Sunderland step up their bid for an immediate return to the English second tier, with play-off contenders Peterborough United ready to do battle for a crucial three points. Kicking off at 3pm at the ABAX Stadium, Jack Ross’ side know the value that three points would bring after they brushed aside sixth place Doncaster Rovers on Good Friday. Producing a performance and result that brought with it an air of relief to Wearside, Charlie Wyke was in fine fettle again as he bagged a goal and an assist in the 2-0 win over Grant McCann’ side. Aiden McGeady played through the pain barrier too and was instrumental in carving Donny open throughout the match, while Ross’ decision to play Alim Ozturk and Jimmy Dunne for Tom Flanagan and Jack Baldwin was justified in the clean sheet. With just two days to prepare for the Posh, changes could be in the offing as Ross looks to freshen things up to avoid fatigue. After a challenging trio of home fixtures, which saw the Lads pick up just four points from a possible nine, Sunderland are back on the road in search of their fourth win in their last six away games. Unbeaten on the road since December 2018, the Black Cats know they must maintain that run between now and the end of the season as three of their final four are away from the Stadium of Light. Peterborough United made up ground on Donny as the race for a play-off spot continued, however, it was just a point as they were held to a draw at Fleetwood Town on Good Friday. That came after three straight wins ignited their late charge following three defeats against relegated Bradford City, AFC Wimbledon and Coventry City. Earlier in the season, both sides played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light. That night, Sunderland saw their lead twice whipped out after they were reduced to 10 men when Bryan Oviedo saw red. Joe Ward initially cancelled out Josh Maja’s first-half opener before Jerome Sinclair looked to have handed the Lads all three points in the 79th minute. However, former Newcastle striker, Ivan Toney, who is Peterborough United’s leading goalscorer this term with 16, levelled six minutes from time. www.safc.com/news/team-news/2019/april/ross-preview-peterborough-unitedRoss ready to go againJack Ross has put Sunderland’s win over to Doncaster Rovers to one side and is now focused on the next hurdle. On Easter Monday, the Black Cats head to Peterborough United in search of another crucial three points in the race for promotion to the Championship. Victory over Doncaster on Good Friday brought a sense of relief after suffering a draw and defeat in their two games previous against Burton Albion and Coventry City. However, with little time to reflect on Friday’s showing, Sunderland are tasked with doing it all again as they take on play-off hopefuls Peterborough in their own back yard. “It’s a demanding schedule but we knew that was going to be the case in April,” Ross told safc.com. “We have enjoyed this week because although it wasn’t a full week, the benefit of having that extra time to prepare was seen on Friday. “We will regroup and see how everyone is physically, do our preparation as quickly as we can for Peterborough – another difficult game – against a good side too. “We will go there in a good frame of mind and we understand what we need to do to reach our goal this season,” he continued. “We got one out of the way on Friday and now we need to go again on Monday and do the same.”
