Yes. They won't be easy. I wonder if Ross will revert to one up front and try to grind out a result.

Especially if we get beat or draw But we actually don't need to win, although it would be nice. Burton also have an outside chance of the play offs and seem a decent L1 team. Has Ross suddenly abandoned all the principles he held for 37 games? Would it make sense to approach this game in the same way that we did against accrington and rochdale's?

We are not in an automatic promotion place yet and we need all the points we can get to keep the chasing pack from overtaking us. We need to win as many games as we can between now and the end of season to avoid another squeaky bum scenario as we have had for the past 4 or so seasons. It would be great to finish a season feeling in control of our own destiny not having to rely on other teams ballsing it up.

Not that I don't want to win, but this is going to be a tricky game and a draw would not be a bad result.

www.safc.com/news/team-news/2019/april/team-news-v-burton-albionMcGeady doubtful, Gooch outJack Ross had provided the latest news from the treatment room, with Aiden McGeady doubtful for tomorrow’s Sky Bet League One meeting with Burton Albion. McGeady missed Saturday’s win at Rochdale on Saturday after being forced off in midweek at Accrington Stanley with a foot injury. Lynden Gooch then picked up a hamstring injury 31 minutes into Sunderland’s win at Spotland, leaving the American sidelined for the next week alongside Lee Cattermole, Reece James and Adam Matthews. “Aiden (McGeady) remains doubtful for tomorrow’s game against Burton Albion,” Ross told the media at his pre-match press conference on Monday. “He did a little bit this morning, but we will just see how he reacts tonight and tomorrow morning and then we’ll make a decision from there. “There’s obviously a balance to be met about tomorrow evening and the games we have left. We want to make sure we don’t have him unavailable for a significant amount of time. “Lee Cattermole will still be absent tomorrow evening and so too will Lynden Gooch with his injury from the weekend.” He continued: “Duncan Watmore, Chris Maguire, Adam Matthews and Reece James remain missing as well, so we’re pretty stretched at the moment. “Lynden will probably be out for about seven to ten days – he’s had a similar injury to this already this season.”

www.safc.com/news/team-news/2019/april/ross-delighted-by-character-of-sideRoss pleased with Lads frame of mindJack Ross has been delighted by the response his players have issued since suffering penalty pain in the Checkatrade Trophy at Wembley. Sunderland return to the Stadium of Light tomorrow night against Burton Albion for the first of three home matches in what is more than likely to be a defining period in the club’s League One season. Level on points with second-place Barnsley after back-to-back wins on the road at Accrington Stanley and Rochdale, the Black Cats are now well placed to move into the automatic promotion places with two games in hand. Speaking to the media at today’s press conference, Ross admitted his players are in a good frame of mind after answering all the questions that came their way following the Wembley defeat. "For us it is more significant for my players,” he said. “To ask them to put so much into those two games post-Wembley and produce a performance level to then draw level with second place is exciting for them. "It just heightens the importance of tomorrow evening. “When you reach a position where the rewards of winning games are obvious in terms of where it takes you in the table then it becomes even more real. He continued: "The players are in a good place and on the back of the two away games we have had since the cup final, that has only increased as well."

www.safc.com/news/team-news/2019/april/match-preview-v-burton-albionSunderland v Burton Albion Preview Sunderland return to the Stadium of Light on Tuesday evening for a trio of fixtures which are set to define their season. Starting with Burton Albion, kick-off 7:45pm, Jack Ross’ side will be looking to take full advantage of their game in hand as a win would move them three clear of Barnsley and crucially into the second automatic promotion place in League One. While a point would be enough for them to leapfrog the Tykes, a win is what the Black Cats ideally need if they are to put a marker down with just six games left following the conclusion of the Brewers test. George Honeyman’s 89th minute winner sparked mass celebrations from the 3,000 travelling fans at Rochdale on Saturday, after Charlie Wyke’s first goal since September had cancelled out Ian Henderson’s opener. That 2-1 win came after a convincing 3-0 victory at Accrington Stanley in midweek as the Lads put behind them their Wembley pain at the end of March. Unbeaten in the league on home soil too, Ross’ men go up against Nigel Clough’s Burton who were the last team to get one over the Lads on home soil in the league. Losing 2-1 to Burton in April 2018, that result condemned the Black Cats to League One football. The Brewers then also got the better of the Lads earlier in the season and they are only one of two sides to defeat them so far in the league after 39 games. So, with that in mind, the stakes couldn’t be higher this time round as the season’s climax nears… Burton head to the Stadium of Light this evening riding the crest of the best wave of form they’ve had this season. Three straight wins and just two defeats in their last 12 games have moved them to within 10 points of the play-offs, however, with just 18 points on offer they’re hopes of a late charge up the table are extremely faint. Jake Buxton, David Templeton and Kyle McFadzean are doubts, leaving Clough with little to choose from at the back. Sunderland, meanwhile, will be without Lee Cattermole, Lynden Gooch, Adam Matthews and Reece James. Aiden McGeady is also doubtful after being forced off at half-time last week at Accrington Stanley. DON’T MISS A SECOND Cash turnstiles will be in operation for tonight’s home match – full details available here. Streaming passes are also on sale now. BBC Radio Newcastle’s Nick Barnes will be broadcasting live right here on safc.com from 2pm. As ever, there will be comprehensive coverage across our digital channels including safc.com’s matchday blog and live updates on Twitter via @sunderlandafc.
