www.skysports.com/football/accrington-vs-sland/preview/393336Accrington vs Sunderland preview Winger Jordan Clark will sit out Accrington's Sky Bet League One clash with high-flying Sunderland on Wednesday evening. Clark picked up his 10th booking of the season in the 5-2 defeat at Burton on March 23 and having missed Saturday's 1-0 home defeat by Fleetwood, will complete a two-game suspension when the Black Cats come calling. Manager John Coleman made five changes at the weekend, with Seamus Conneely and Ross Sykes both back for the first time since the 2-2 draw at Sunderland on February 15. Stanley sit in 18th place, just two points clear of the drop zone, although they have two games in hand on all but one of the sides below them. Sunderland will be without skipper George Honeyman as he completes a three-match ban following his dismissal at Wycombe on March 9. Manager Jack Ross will run the rule over a series of players carrying knocks following the club's heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat by Portsmouth in Sunday's Checkatrade Trophy final. Striker Will Grigg has been nursing an ankle injury for some time and he will be assessed after managing 77 minutes at Wembley, while loan signing Kazaiah Sterling, who was ineligible at the weekend, returns to contention. However, full-back Adam Matthews is out with a recurrence of a hamstring problem and joins Donald Love, Chris Maguire and Duncan Watmore on the sidelines. The reverse fixture was drawn 2-2 at the Stadium of Light in February. Accrington were leading 2-0 before George Honeyman and Aiden McGeady rescued a point for the Black Cats. Accrington Stanley have lost five of their last six games in League One (W1). Sunderland are unbeaten in seven away games (W2 D5) since falling 1-3 to Portsmouth in December. Accrington have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last 10 games in the League One (19 goals conceded), keeping two in three games before this run. Sunderland have gained 23 points from losing positions this season, more than any other side in the division.

www.safc.com/news/team-news/2019/april/match-preview-v-accrington-stanleyMatch Preview: Accrington Stanley v SunderlandSunderland travel to Accrington Stanley this evening looking to banish their Wembley heartache with a crucial win in the race for automatic promotion in League One. Penalty pain in the Checkatrade Trophy Final against Portsmouth on Sunday has prompted questions about the Black Cats’ resolve as they look to secure an immediate return to the Championship. While Aiden McGeady’s double was in the capital amounted to little in the end, Sunderland returned to the north east on Monday to begin preparations for tonight’s trip to the Wham Stadium with a sense of pride burning deep from all corners of the fanbase. After thousands packed out Trafalgar Square on Saturday night, 40,000 fans turned out once again at the national stadium to roar the Lads on against Pompey. But while defeat was endured for the sixth-straight time at Wembley. There was a tangible sense of pride, emotion and passion in the Lads that donned the red and white stripes. And now, we head into these final nine league games together. We might’ve been beaten at Wembley, but we march on as one with the possibility of automatic promotion well and truly in our own hands. Yet to taste a defeat in the league in 2019, Jack Ross’ side will be targeting three points with tonight being one of three games they have in hand over Barnsley in second. The Tykes sit six clear as things stand, but victory at the Wham Stadium will see that slice in half before a trip to Rochdale proceeds tonight on Saturday. Sunderland will be without captain George Honeyman who is once again suspended for league action. Adam Matthews remains sidelined with Duncan Watmore and Chris Maguire. Accrington have won just three of their last 18 matches in all competitions, with two of those wins coming in the league. Five defeats in their last seven matches has seen Stanley slip down the table too, with a 3-1 win away at Wycombe Wanderers their last set of their points in March. Without a home win since February, the Black Cats will be sensing blood as the race for promotion enters a decisive month. DON’T MISS A KICK Tickets for Sunderland's trip to the Wham Stadium are now off sale, however, tickets will be available to purchase at the ground on the day of the game. Streaming passes are available for supporters based in the UK. For more information, click here. BBC Radio Newcastle’s Nick Barnes will be broadcasting live right here on safc.com from 7:30pm. As ever, there will be comprehensive coverage across our digital channels including safc.com’s matchday blog and live updates on Twitter via @sunderlandafc.

www.safc.com/news/team-news/2019/april/ross-preview-v-accrington'This is a really important fixture for us' - RossJack Ross has cranked up importance of tonight's Sky Bet League One trip to Accrington Stanley. Just days after enduring penalty pain in the Checkatrade Trophy Final at Wembley, Sunderland head to the Wham Stadium as they resume their league campaign. With nine games left, Sunderland sit six adrift of second place Barnsley but with three games in hand. Tonight's match, kick-off 7:45pm, provides Ross' lads with a chance to half that gap with the Tykes not in action 'til the weekend. Speaking at a Monday's press conference, the Scot didn't mince his words as he hammered home the significance of tonight’s fixture. “We’ve been back to normality. For me, preparations for Accrington began immediately after the game on Sunday. “I said post-match I thought it was important for players to have Sunday evening with their families to allow that initial disappointment to dissipate naturally. “They’ve been really good since. Yesterday and today. “The good thing for us is we’ve got a lot to focus on and regardless of how Sunday panned out, we recognised the importance of tomorrow evening and Saturday too.” He continued: “The break before the final allowed us to regroup a little bit, but we always knew post-Sunday we had a schedule that is very demanding - mentally and physically. “When you add in, how the game panned out Sunday - the length of it and obviously how it ended - it is draining and we’ll need our whole squad throughout this period, there’s no doubt about that. “Not just on the pitch, but off it too. We’ll need to drive each other forward. “We’ve always had a huge drive to go and achieve promotion this season and, if anything, the disappointment from Sunday has fuelled that even more. I’ve certainly not sensed any need for me to pick them up. They’ve done that themselves which is encouraging.”

We drew 1-1 at their place earlier in the season. Our, somewhat laboured, performance in the abandoned game was put down to the weather. Subsequent performances indicated more underlying problems. In the home game, we then turned in the worst performance I have ever seen from any Sunderland side, how we salvaged the draw (indeed could have even won it) remains a mystery. They'll go for us from the off. I don't think we have the mental, nor physical strength, to see them off.
There's no Honeyman (no matter what people think of his ability), and I doubt Catts will be up for another 90 minutes, so Power's doppelganger to start & quite possibly a return of McGeoch (sp). Grigg, or Wyke, up top will be isolated & the back 4 will line up how we finished at Wembley.
Roll on this time tomorrow

Accrington have almost 30 points less than us. We ought to be strutting our stuff but their need for points is as great as ours.

I do feel (again) that we need to make a statement in this game. A good win against a struggling team would not only give us 3 points but would also pressurize Barnsley. Both are equally important at this stage.
But I guess we'll still see a laboured 4-5-1 formation and yet another game where we try to wear them down instead of going for a knockout blow.

If Jack Ross plays for a win rather than not getting beat I'll show my arse in Debenhams window.
