Portsmouth and Charlton both won tonight so the playoffs group is getting very tight.

Stats show we had 1 shot on target the whole game.
That stat needs to improve dramatically over the next two months.

www.safc.com/news/team-news/2019/march/barnsley/ross-post-barnsley'It's a point in difficult conditions' - RossJack Ross admitted his side can be reasonably happy with a point in difficult weather conditions at Barnsley this evening. Strong wind played havoc throughout as both sides traded blows, with neither team managing to land that knockout blow that wouldâve handed them a crucial three points in the Sky Bet League One promotion race. Sunderlandâs best chances came in the second 45 when the wind was in their favour, Max Power stabbed wide after excellent work from Jack Baldwin before Lee Cattermole failed to hit the target from six yards as he connected with Lynden Goochâs low cross. In the end though, both sides were forced to settle for a point while Luton Town extended their lead at the top to nine points â over the Black Cats â following their win at Bradford City. Speaking post-match, Ross shared his disappointment over the way the weather impacted on the quality of the match. âWhen you play in weather conditions like we did tonight itâs always going to be difficult,â he said. âAnything can happen in weather like that so to come out of it as we did and relatively unscathed, I think we can be reasonably satisfied. âSometimes when you arenât on the pitch you canât appreciate how difficult it is. Barnsley were really strong in the first half and made it difficult for us to get out of our own half. âBoth sets of players struggled in the conditions but had chances, itâs just a shame we were unable to take one of them.â

There's something lacking with all the players and I can't put my finger on it, they don't look like they're up for it, but they must be.

The lack of efforts on target has been like that since Barnsley at home. Watching us almost throw away a 3-0 lead, it seems to me that Ross decided he couldn't trust his back four. Since that point we've played two holding midfield players in almost every match, meaning that, without a proper link man, whoever plays up top has been isolated. In addition to that, as we don't have any genuine creativity in the middle of the park, it basically means we aren't able to create many clear cut chances. As to whether or not the players are up for it, well I think Saturday showed they were, however I'm not so sure they can handle the pressure.

I think the players are up for it but as you say, Ross has set up the team in a way that doesn't allow them to express themselves as an attacking force. If you look at the 16 draws we've had this season - had we gone for it in these games and enede up winning half and losing half we would still be 8pts better off than we are now and sitting comfortably in 2nd with a game in hand. The more I think about it, the more Ross' insistence on safety first is to blame for us not being in an automatic promotion spot and if we don't go up this year I would suggest he needs to go (which will of course be too late for us as a club this season)

I went to the game, conditions had a massive part to play for both sides, the wind was bending the corner flags down, we played against the wind and Barnsley just about the better of the 2 teams, they hit the crossbar 1st half but we stood up to them well.
2nd half wind for us, we came out getting tight on them and battling and looked like they had a rocket up the ass at half time, we were the better team 2nd half, however our keeper kept kicking it downfield and just went straight to the other keeper and again we played high balls and looked rubbish but when played on the ground we looked very good some good interchanging passing.
We never got any proper service to Grigg who looks a very good player but needs better service and I would have liked Sterling on a lot earlier.
Also when Grigg was through the Barnsley Defender was pulling him back so much when he got his shot off he was more or less horizontal and the keeper saved with his leg, then ref give a goal kick, I went mental some decisions like that, ref was poor but not as bad as some as we had.

I stick by that. Only Ross himself will know why we have gone more defensive. He seemed to have had a wake up call after the Accrington farce, but three games later we're back to ultra cautious. I won't be among those calling for Ross' head if we don't go up, but wouldn't criticise those that did.
