We always seemed to be in control there, with 'Boro creating almost nothing, and the 3 points were thoroughly deserved.

Mepham on debut clean sheet

Chris Mepham reflected on his debut and Sunderland’s win over Middlesbrough.

The centre-back produced an eye-catching display to keep Boro out, as Chris Rigg’s strike ensured victory in the Wear-Tees clash.

Speaking to safc.com, Mepham described the supporters as the “twelfth player” as they roared the Lads over the line.

“We’re delighted with the result – I thought the performance was good even though we didn’t have lots of the ball,” he said.

“They’re a comfortable side on the ball, but I don’t remember too many chances they created.

“It shows that when you’re compact without the ball, you can hurt teams the other way.

“One-nil as a defender is always the nicest score-line.”

He continued: “It’s a long season and there’s going to be plenty of ups and downs, but it was a great reaction to last week.

“When we were hanging on to the lead, the supporters became the twelfth man.”
