Mepham Arrives on loan
Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce the signing of defender Chris Mepham.
The Wales international has completed a loan move to Wearside from AFC Bournemouth, joining Régis Le Bris’ side until the end of the 2024-25 season.
Mepham, 26, made 61 Premier League appearances for the Cherries and played an integral role in the Club’s promotion to the top flight in 2022.
Kristjaan Speakman added: “We are delighted to welcome Chris to Sunderland. This is an area we wanted to strengthen before the deadline and Chris has shown that he can play at this level and beyond. He has demonstrated an ability to perform consistently throughout his career and we are confident he will take this move in his stride. In addition to the defensive qualities he will bring to our defence, he will also add experience. This will be invaluable on the field and in the dressing room.”
The London-born defender started his youth career with Chelsea. He joined Brentford in 2012 and made his senior debut five years later, and he quickly became an established member of the Bees’ senior squad in the EFL Championship.
After making 48 appearances in West London and making his debut for Wales, Mepham moved to Bournemouth in January 2019 for an undisclosed fee.
Then 21, the defender quickly adapted to life in the Premier League and although the Cherries were relegated in May 2020, he starred in the second tier when Scott Parker’s side returned to the top flight two years later.
The 26-year-old departs Dean Court with 121 appearances under his belt, including 61 in the Premier League.
Mepham is also a regular for Wales, earning 36 caps to date for the Dragons, whom he represented at Euro 2020.
