Lads defeated at Bradford City
Bradford City 2-1 Sunderland AFC
A much-changed Sunderland AFC side suffered defeat at Bradford City this evening.
First-half goals from Andy Cook and Calum Kavanagh punished the Black Cats in what was a closely-fought contest.
Romaine Mundle pulled a goal back in the second 45, but the hosts held on for the win.
Régis Le Bris named a completely new starting XI from the Lads’ trip to Blackpool on Saturday, with Abdoullah Ba handed his first pre-season minutes.
Mundle was bright from the off in red and white and stung Sam Walker’s gloves with a superb strike from distance that needed saving on 22 minutes.
The tricky winger showed his quality on the ball again on the half-hour mark, breezing past four players as he carried the ball from inside his own half to the edge of the Bradford box. The hosts had to resort to fouling the youngster to stop him advancing before Adil Aouchiche sent his free-kick over.
Aouchiche then went close to breaking the deadlock on 39 minutes. This time he couldn’t get enough bend on his strike from 20 yards after good work from Chris Rigg.
Bradford seized control of the friendly shortly after, with Cook lashing home a thunderous strike from 20 yards after the loose ball fell into his path.
Sunderland looked to respond but were denied a penalty when Ba went down under a challenge - and the hosts clinically broke to double their advantage.
Alex Pattison timed his pass well to feed Kavanagh, who calmly rolled the ball past Moore.
Rigg and Aouchiche drew saves from Walker at the start of the second 45 as the Black Cats looked to respond.
Eventually the Lads’ paid off as Mundle halved the deficit on 65 minutes. After a quick break down the left, the winger came inside and confidently slotted home.
The Black Cats pushed for a leveller as Aouchiche saw his effort blocked, but Bradford held on for the victory.
Sunderland: Moore, Pembélé, Hjelde, Anderson, Johnson (Crompton, 70), Embleton, Rigg (Jones, 70), Ba (Watson, 70), Mundle, Aouchiche, Rusyn
Subs: Chibueze, Hemir, Lavery, Middlemas
