"It has been very enjoyable so far"
As the Sunderland first-team squad complete their first week of the pre-season schedule, Luke O’Nien has been reflecting on a productive spell back at the Academy of Light.
The first-team squad and Régis Le Bris were straight to work this week with training sessions and intensive gym work as they prepare for the 2024-25 Sky Bet Championship campaign.
That feeling of excitement from returning to pre-season will never escape an ever-enthusiastic Luke. “It’s flown by those six years and I am looking forward to starting my seventh season,” he said.
“It’s been nice to catching up with people and obviously getting back out on the grass. Getting that stiffness out, getting that fitness built up.”
On the first week of pre-season, new Head Coach Le Bris has been casting his eye over the squad and wasting no time in getting his message across to the players.
O’Nien continued: “We’ve gone over the philosophy and he likes it when it goes into training straight away. Even though we are six or seven days in, the philosophy and the style is in there straight away so that is good.
“It gives us five or six weeks to learn it before the first game of the season. It’s important that everybody knows each other’s jobs and he’s made that very clear.”
The first pre-season friendlies come next weekend with two squads heading to South Shields and Gateshead.
Whilst laying out the blueprint for the forthcoming season has been paramount, building fitness has also been a priority.
“The running team have been putting us through our paces back on the grass and in the gym as well. The boys are looking sharp!” said Luke.
“The boys are looking good, and it has been very enjoyable so far.”
