Here's how much promotion could be worth to Sunderland
Back-to-back relegations have seen Sunderland fall from the Premier League to League One, leaving the club to compete in the third tier for only the second season in the club's history.
The Black Cats can begin to make amends for their failures by beating Charlton in the League One play-off final at Wembley on Sunday and climbing back into the Championship at the first time of asking.
But what would promotion be worth to the club?
Last season, Sunderland's revenues in the Championship were a mammoth £63.7million - as the club banked its first of three lots of Premier League parachute payments.
This was almost exactly half of the £124million the club received in its relegation season in 2016/17.
Parachute payments last season amounted to around £42million - and yet, despite having such a huge budget, the club finished rock bottom for the second successive season.
This season, Premier League parachute payments dropped, but were still more than £34million with the club in League One, far above any other team in the division.
Next season, whichever division the club is in, parachute payments will fall dramatically, by around £20million.
Earlier this year, Sheffield United - who will compete in the Premier League next season - hailed the "significant impact" of promotion, as revenues climbed from £11.4million in League One (2016/17) to £20million in the Championship (2017/18).
This was largely from broadcasting income being five-times higher, but the Blades also reaped considerably more revenues from gate receipts.
Likewise Millwall, having won promotion from League One in 2017, saw revenues climb from £10million to £15.6million year-on-year - all thanks to the more lucrative broadcasting revenues in the Championship.
