Simon Moore joins Sunderland
Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce the signing of Simon Moore, who will join the Club on 1 July 2024.
Joining on a two-year contract with a Club option of a further year, the goalkeeper becomes our first signing of the summer and moves to the Stadium of Light following a three-year spell with Coventry City.
Moore has extensive experience under his belt, having made 288 senior appearances in a career that started in 2007 with Brading Town and has taken him to the Premier League.
The goalkeeper joined Brentford in 2009 as back-up to Wojciech Szczęsny before becoming the Bees’ number one in 2012 aged 22.
Moore sealed a move to Cardiff City one season later and spent time on loan with Bristol City during his time with the Bluebirds, which concluded in 2016 when he joined Sheffield United.
He featured 45 times as the Blades won promotion from Sky Bet League One during the 2016-17 season and was part of the squad that reached the Premier League in 2019.
Moore most recently featured for Coventry, making 44 appearances for the Sky Blues in the Sky Bet Championship.
After moving to Wearside, Moore said: “It feels fantastic to be here - when I heard Sunderland were interested, I jumped at the opportunity. I’ve been part of some very successful dressing rooms over the years, and I’d like to think I can bring that to Sunderland. I’m looking forward to getting in, meeting the rest of the lads and helping move the Club in the right direction.”
Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman added: “We are really pleased to welcome Simon to our Club. This summer, we felt it was vital to identify and recruit a goalkeeper who is capable of pushing Anthony Patterson daily, and who has additional qualities to training and match environments. Simon has a different profile to many players within our group and he is as motivated to push Anthony as he is to help our younger goalkeepers and the wider player group. We are delighted he has joined the Club.”
