Sunderland owners tipped to make huge off-field decision if they lose v QPR
Sunderland have been tipped to make a potentially huge call should they lose against QPR this weekend.
Sunderland have now lost their last six games in the Championship.
A 4-2 defeat vs Southampton last weekend condemned the Black Cats to a sixth-straight defeat for the first time since 2006.
Mike Dodds now finds his temporary side in 12th place of the table but with just nine points between them and the drop zone, with a very tricky game against QPR on the agenda this weekend.
The R’s have dragged themselves out of the bottom three after losing just one of their last five, with a win this weekend able to lift them as high as 17th, and close the gap between themselves and the Black Cats to just five points.
Sunderland owners could make huge managerial call if they lose vs QPR
Speaking on the Championship Check-In podcast ahead of this weekend, EFL pundit Sam Parkin gave his verdict on the state of affairs at Sunderland, hinting that he thinks the club’s owners could make a very bold decision regarding the management, should they lose vs QPR.
Parkin said:
“I mean, if they lose another one. They could… I don’t know, they could so something, couldn’t they? The guys that are in charge are presumably at the club for the long haul, but they could bring someone in to help, couldn’t they? They might think about it.”
He added:
“I always say six, seven [defeats] gets a manager the sack, and I know we’re not in that kind of landscape here with what we’re talking about. But, you catch my drift, it’s pretty desperate.”
Kyril Louis-Dreyfus may need a ‘Big Sam’ character to halt the rot
There’s no doubting that a defeat this weekend would really set the alarm bells ringing for Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and Kristjaan Speakman.
And if it’s another weekend where a lot of the teams near the bottom all pick up wins, Sunderland could really be in troubled waters.
Just three points separate Sheffield Wednesday in 23rd and Plymouth Argyle in 17th, with Sunderland only six points ahead of Plymouth; so with 27 points still to play for, the Black Cats are far from being out of the woods.
If matters worsen and Sunderland enter into a very perilous league position, Louis-Dreyfus and Speakman may have no other option than to bring someone in.
Things clearly aren’t working under Dodds right now and it might take a Sam Allardyce-type figure, or even a Neil Warnock whose got bags of Championship and survival experience, to oversee the final few games and ensure Sunderland’s Championship status, like Parkin hints at.
Relegation would be the worst-possible outcome for Sunderland. It would really set them back and undo all their hard work over the past couple of years.
Dodds remains a decent coach and a good result against QPR this weekend would ease a lot of pressure on him and the club.
But the form table certainly hands the momentum to QPR ahead of Saturday’s game at the Stadium of Light.
