EchoNext Sunderland manager: Ex-Ajax and PSV man of 'serious interest' to decision-makersJames Copley Another name has been linked with the vacant Sunderland head coach job... Pascal Jansen has been linked with the vacant Sunderland head coach position. Sunderland are on the hunt for a permanent successor to Michael Beale, who saw his disastrous tenure ended in the new year, leaving Mike Dodds to take interim charge until the end of the season. After finishing 16th in the Championship, 10 places worse off than the previous campaign, the Black Cats have begun their search for a new head coach. Ex-Reims manager Will Still is believed to have engaged in advanced talks with the club before U-turning when news of Lens’ interest in the former Preston North End man broke. Since then, decision-makers at the Stadium of Light have pivoted with reports linking the club to Dutch coach Jansen. Jansen was head coach of AZ between 2020 and 2024. The 51-year-old also played youth football with Ajax before his career was cut short due to a knee injury. Jansen has previously worked with Jong PSV for two seasons between 2015-2017. Alan Nixon of The Sun has now stated that Jansen is of “serious interest” to Sunderland following the Still debacle, adding that the deal could hinge on which staff the head coach is allowed to bring with him to the Academy of Light. Jansen managed 162 games at AZ, boasting a win percentage rate of 58.02 per cent during his time in the Dutch top division. However, he was dismissed in January after narrowly avoiding a KNVB Cup upset against amateur team Quick Boys.

linkSunderland set sights on London-born boss, sacked in JanuaryJames Ray Sunderland set sights on London-born boss, sacked in January Sunderland hold a ‘serious interest’ in available manager Pascal Jansen, reporter Alan Nixon has said on X. Sunderland have been on the hunt for a new boss for over 100 days now. They parted ways with Michael Beale in February and placed coach Mike Dodds in charge on a caretaker basis once again. The move allowed the Black Cats plenty of time to identify their ideal target, but the lack of progress in their search has left fans disappointed. Names have been linked while Championship rivals make appointments of their own and now, ‘serious interest’ in another manager has emerged. Speculation had circulated over a potential move for London-born Dutchman Pascal Jansen, and reporter Alan Nixon has now said on X that Sunderland, though it depends what terms are on offer and the staff he will look to bring with him, Jansen has been out of work since January, when he departed AZ Alkmaar. He had held the role for a little over three years having previously worked as Arne Slot’s assistant manager. Another name linked Sunderland fans can be forgiven if they’re growing tired of the persisting managerial links, especially when none have yielded an appointment of yet. Jansen is an intriguing candidate though, and he could be a popular choice. After working in numerous roles as an assistant manager and academy boss, the step up to the manager’s role at AZ Alkmaar was one that Jansen impressed in. He led the Dutch side in European football and in 162 games, he managed an average points per game of 1.93 (Transfermarkt). A shot at the Stadium of Light would offer him a chance to test himself in a highly competitive league as he looks to get back in the dugout following his winter sacking. An appointment is needed soon Ideally, the Black Cats would have had a new boss in place by now. The faltering search has certainly seen them lose ground on Championship rivals in preparation for next season. Yes, players and staff are still on breaks at clubs across the EFL, but the lack of a manager will have impacted recruitment planning despite the Sunderland hierarchy’s control over that matter. The lack of clarity will have done players no favours as they look to make decisions over their own futures too. Perhaps Jansen finally answers prayers on Wearside with their serious interest hopefully leading to a long-awaited appointment.

linkSunderland Managerial Target Under Consideration At Greek GiantsKris Sanyal Sunderland managerial target Pascal Jansen is under consideration at Greek giants Panathinaikos this summer. Jansen has emerged as a target for Sunderland who are still struggling to settle on their next managerial appointment. Sunderland have been looking at several candidates and the Dutchman’s name is now being closely assessed by the club. However, they could face competition for his signature as another club are now taking a look at the former AZ Alkmaar manager. According to Greek daily Sportime, Jansen’s name is also under consideration at Greek giants Panathinaikos. The club are also in the process of finding a new manager and their top target has been Maurizio Sarri. Panathinaikos have made their offer to the Italian but are yet to get any definitive decision from the former Chelsea and Lazio boss. The club are now considering a plan B and they are assessing Jansen, whose name has been proposed to their board. He has been out of work since leaving AZ in January and recently held talks with Norwich before they appointed Johannes Hoff Thorup as their new manager last week.

linkPascal Jansen 2023 comments will be very interesting to SunderlandSpeaking to Sky Sports in 2023, Jansen spoke about AZ’s philosophy, and the fact that the club knows they often have to sell their star assets. He hinted at AZ being something of a stepping stone for players, often young, but he relished that challenge. Jansen said: “The club [AZ] and I already had similar DNA. Logically, I support that philosophy. “I am aware of what it means for me as a head coach. When you lose your best players every season, that is something that many coaches, I assume, would not want to happen. But this is our way. “We understand that the Eredivisie is a league where young players show their skills and then move on. “The players we bring in arrive before they are on the radar and before they have reached their full potential. It is challenging but it is exciting.” Pascal Jensen could be ideal next Sunderland managerComments about players often leaving every summer, and often young talents who get snapped up by bigger clubs, will be very interesting to Sunderland. It sounds like the model at AZ is very similar to that at Sunderland with Louis-Dreyfus bound to cash in on some of his top players this summer. And in seasons to come, if Sunderland keep on buying players young and cheap, and developing them well, then they’ll continue to sell off their best players. It’s arguably part of being a Championship club and until Sunderland are in the Premier League and stabilised, this pattern of selling will continue. The fact that Jansen worked well with AZ under these conditions; consistently finishing in the top five of the Eredivisie table, suggests that he could work the same kind of magic at Sunderland, regardless of who the club sells this summer. It’ll be a big transition from the Dutch top flight to the Championship. But there’s certainly a lot to suggest that Jansen could not only thrive in English football, but that he could thrive under the current Sunderland model. That seems to be something that not many managers can do.

Cannot wait to see who they name as coach, not to find out who it is, but to hear them say that 'this is the coach we have wanted from the start'

It would explain a lot but I’ll believe it when all the I’s are dotted and the T’s crossed.
No idea how this would affect the start of the season?
Can points be deducted for gross incompetence?

I can actually believe it Les, think the owner can make a few bucks plus he's starting to get it in the neck from supporters, something he probably didn't expect or wants. Part of me hopes it's true, but as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for 🙄

link to full article Acun Ilicali’s worrying comments on Sunderland manager candidate Liam RoseniorRosenior was, in the eyes of many, harshly sacked by Hull City last month, after he guided the club to a 7th place finish in the Championship. Hull City fans had mixed feelings. But owner Acun Ilicali later came out and said that Rosenior was sacked because of the negative style of play. Ilicali said after Rosenior’s exit: “I want offensive football. I want an attacking, entertaining team. I said it from the first minute I bought this club. “I said I would rather lose 3-2 than have a boring 0-0. If you are counting the points and draw every game 0-0 you are going to get relegated. If you lose 3-2, it means you will win another game 4-1.” According to stats from FBREF, Rosenior’s Hull City boasted the joint-fourth highest average possession last season (55.4%, exactly the same as Sunderland), also making the third-most touches of any team in the league. But the Tigers also recorded more touches than anyone in the league in the defensive third, and the 12th most in the attacking third. Despite that, Hull finished in 7th for goals scored last season (68), and 9th for total shots. Why Liam Rosenior may not be a great fit for SunderlandIt certainly seems like Ilicali and Rosenior had a difference in opinions, and there’s certainly a case to argue on both sides. Possession, passing, and touches stats show that Hull City had a lot of the ball under Rosenior, but often times it was in their own half. But the goals stats show that Hull still provided at the other end of the pitch, so Hull were a very good side in transition under Rosenior. Sunderland though, who many said were extremely bland to watch under Michael Beale and Mike Dodds, still managed more shots than Hull City last season, despite scoring only 51 goals. So there may be a sense that the numbers paint a prettier picture of Hull City under Rosenior than in reality, and hiring Rosenior could mean a continuation of this negative football that Sunderland desperately need to break away from. Ilicali, whilst appearing quite ruthless in his decisions as Hull City owner, may have had good reasons to part ways with Rosenior when he did.

linkShock New Name In Sunderland Job Mix But Compensation Could Be IssueKris Sanyal Sunderland have a shock new name on their managerial radar as they aim to fill the hot seat the Stadium of Light, but agreeing a compensation package could be a sticking point, according to journalist Alan Nixon. The Black Cats’ managerial search has dragged on for weeks with still no end in sight as the club continue to deliberate. The club have reportedly prepared a three-man shortlist consisting of Pascal Jansen, Stephen Robinson and Dave Challinor. However, the club are considering other names and QPR’s Marti Cifuentes has emerged as one of the shock candidates to become the Sunderland boss. The Black Cats have been left impressed with the way the Spaniard held together QPR last season and kept them away from the relegation zone in the Championship. But agreeing on a compensation package with QPR is likely to be their biggest challenge if they want to land him. QPR are unlikely to want to lose their manager to a Championship rival and are likely to demand a hefty fee. However, Cifuentes is definitely a target for Sunderland and could be the top contender for the job.

Mag RagSunderland move on with next manager after Pascal Jansen decisionSunderland are searching for a new manager but have so far not managed to get their man Pascal Jansen is no longer under consideration for the vacant Sunderland head coach role. The Dutchman had been one of the front runners to become the Black Cats' next manager, but reports have emerged that the former AZ Alkmaar boss is no longer in the running with Sunderland pushing on with other names on their shortlist. The Black Cats have been without a permanent manager since Michael Beale’s sacking in February after just twelve games in charge, and the season being allowed to fizzle out into a 16th-placed finish under Mike Dodds’ interim charge. Former Reims boss Will Still had been persistently linked with the role on Wearside since Beale’s departure, but it is reported that RC Lens are set to appoint the Belgium-born coach, with Still’s U-turn reportedly due to staffing and investment concerns at Sunderland. As such, the Wearside hierarchy have been forced to pursue other options in their over 100-day long search for Beale’s successor. Seemingly, this latest development with Jansen leaves former Hull City boss Liam Rosenior leading the race for the Wearside top job. The 39-year-old was surprisingly sacked by The Tigers in the wake of their seventh-place finish last season. With Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus saying on Friday a decision was ‘imminent’, Rosenior could likely be announced this week as Sunderland’s new head coach.

linkPascal Jansen out of the running to be Sunderland's new head coachBy Scott Wilson PASCAL JANSEN is no longer under consideration to be Sunderland’s new head coach. Jansen, who spent four years as the boss of Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, had been regarded as one of the front-runners to take over at the Stadium of Light. The 51-year-old has held a series of discussions with senior Black Cats officials, who are keen to finally resolve their search for a permanent successor to Michael Beale, who was dismissed almost four months ago. Sunderland chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus released a statement on Friday afternoon in which he claimed an appointment was “imminent”, but sources have indicated that Jansen is no longer being considered for the position. Instead, Louis-Dreyfus and sporting director Kristjaan Speakman are focusing their attention elsewhere. Bayern Munich Under-19s boss Rene Maric remains an option, although Bayern officials remain confident he will sign a contract with the Bundesliga club that will see him take on a new position as part of Vincent Kompany’s first-team coaching group. QPR boss Marti Cifuentes has also been heavily linked with a possible move to Wearside in the last few days, and the 41-year-old is understood to have his supporters within the executive team at the Stadium of Light. Scott Wilson Column: Middlesbrough and Sunderland have gone in divergent directions - and one should worry Cifuentes made his name with Swedish side Hammersby before moving to Loftus Road to take over at QPR last October. He inherited a QPR side that was deep in trouble in the Championship relegation zone, but impressed as he inspired a recovery that eventually led to the London side finishing in 18th position, six points clear of the drop zone. The 41-year-old Spaniard has also been linked with Burnley, who are searching for a new boss of their own following Kompany’s departure last month. Liam Rosenior is another option for Sunderland, with the 39-year-old currently out of work following his dismissal from Hull City after the end of last season. Rosenior spent just over a year-and-a-half in charge of the Tigers, and was widely seen to have done a good job. However, he was sacked after failing to secure a play-off place last season, with Hull chairman Acun Ilicali stating he had dismissed Rosenior because of ‘differences in footballing philosophy’. Sunderland were linked with Dave Challinor and Stephen Robinson at the end of last week, but neither boss figures in the club’s thoughts.
