‘Why announce this?’ – Plenty of Sunderland fans are concerned after latest squad news
Aiden McGeady has revealed he’s been playing with a broken foot for the last three matches as Sunderland hunt a late surge into the top two.
The automatic promotion chase in League One is reaching a thrilling climax, with Portsmouth, Barnsley and Sunderland all still in with a shout of finishing second.
Sunderland are now the outsiders, four points behind Barnsley with a game in hand. They face Portsmouth this weekend in a huge six-pointer, a game in which defeat would surely end their hopes of a top two place.
Winger Aiden McGeady has been in terrific form for the Black Cats, but he’s revealed that he’s been forced to play through the pain barrier over the last few weeks, the result of a broken foot sustained during the 3-0 win against Accrington in early April.
Whilst it’s commendable that he’s committed to the cause, some fans see the news as having a negative impact. There’s a worry he could now be targeted by some aggressive challenges late in the season, as well as a concern that playing him highlights how weak the squad really is.
Whilst some fans feel McGeady’s reveal shows his character and commitment, as you’ll read below opinion is split.
We had players the last two seasons that refused to play when fully fit! This season we had McGuire trying to run off a broken leg and Mcgeady playing with a broken foot! ??

Can't fault his commitment, but surely he can't be making the final decision on playing over a qualified physio?

Not sure we should have made this information public as Joey Barton likely to have one his players 'target him' now #safc

Fair play to the lad’s devotion, but surely this is where club medical staff & management come in to ensure player welfare is top priority? No use to us (or himself!) if he ends up long-term crocked!

Why announce this? Fair play to the lad but this makes him a massive target…..it’s a six week recovery so season is over as the earlier rumours implied. Protect his career, we need 11 fully fit players on the pitch.

Think he needs to sit Portsmouth game out now Maguire is back. Not just because they will target him but the last 2 games he's looked like a player carrying an injury and has looked knackered in the 2nd half. Even when he came on against cov he didn't have much of an impact

So because of Ross and all his negative draws this season we have to play a bloke with a broken foot? Total joke let him rest he's done his bit 100% for the team!

Show how much faith the manager has in Gooch
